What foods are allowed on Medifast?

Before you start to diet with Medifast, you probably want to find out what kinds of foods you are allowed to eat on the diet. Well, you likely already know that the Medifast program is based on meal replacements made up of shakes, bars and other foods that the company has created to replace your regular meals.

Those foods aren’t all you get to eat though. Each day you’ll have one special meal that you make yourself. These are your Lean and green meals. This is made up of lean protein and lots of vegetables. The biggest thing that is restricted on the diet is sweets and anything that is high in carbohydrates. Fat is fairly restricted too, but really not quite as much as the carbs.

As for the allowable foods on Medifast, there’s a lot you can eat. For protein you can have just about any animal protein. While you are allowed to eat more chicken and turkey than you can indulge in beef, if you want to eat the higher fat pork chops and steaks, you are allowed. Just be sure to count your ounces so you don’t eat too much. For red meats, you generally are allowed five ounces.

If you love fish, you’ll be pleased that for most types of fish and shellfish you can have as much as seven ounces. But there are some fattier varieties of fish that will limit you to just five ounces with them as well, such as salmon, farmed catfish, and some varieties of tuna.

For vegetables, you can eat nearly all of them. There’s only a few that are restricted and they are all high carb. These would be potatoes, corn, carrots, onions, brussel sprouts and a few others. But there should be plenty on the list of allowed veggies to provide all the variety you will need while you are dieting. You may even find a few new favorites once you start exploring the different types of vegetables and salad greens that you can eat.
