Hemorrhoids are swollen veins in the anal canal that can be bothersome, painful and itchy. While hemorrhoids are usually not serious, they can become large and can also cause rectal bleeding. A symptom of either internal or external bleeding hemorrhoids is usually bright red blood streaks on toilet paper when wiping and there may also be blood in the toilet and on the surface of the stool.

Please be sure to see your physician if you experience rectal bleeding as it may be a sign of a much more serious medical issue. It’s important, if you’re not sure, to be diagnosed with bleeding hemorrhoids rather than to assume the blood is from hemorrhoid bleeding.

If after one week, symptoms are not relieved or are not showing signs of improving, especially if you are over the age of 50 and are experiencing rectal bleeding, please consult your healthcare provider for advice and a confirmation of diagnosis of bleeding hemorrhoids.
