Many fitness professionals would agree that running is one of the best exercises that you can do to lose weight and get into fantastic shape. However, what if running is just not an option because a person is not physically able to run? The best alternative or a BETTER alternative would be to use an elliptical machine for your weight loss program. Elliptical cross trainers offer low impact training, challenging resistance routines, full body workout, and some offer different incline levels. Here we will look more closely at these benefits of using an elliptical as an alternative to running.
For most of my life I have been fitting off injuries to my shins and slight stress fractures. For years that meant eight not running or using an exercise bike. However, in the past year I have used the NordicTrack AudioStrider 990 for my cardio training and have had fantastic results. It became very clear to me that without the pounding of running that I was able to exercise a lot longer and more often because my body was not getting as beat up. The likelihood of an injury flaring up was slim to none. When I started running again that my shins were in much better shape and I was able to take the pounding of running much better.
My elliptical machines ability to mimic the running machine was perfect for me because I wanted to run, but was just not able to. Also, I loved that if I was feeling good a more challenging course was just a push of a button away. I could increase my resistance or my angle for a little extra something. Where I live it is very flat and I don’t get to run on hills very often so when I go do road races where there are slight inclines I am not prepared and my body cannot handle it. Now I can simulate that type of course and better be prepared for it.
The exercise of running does provide a great aerobic exercise and cardio-vascular workout, but the strain on your knees, ankles, and even hips can cause permanent damage. Elliptical cross trainers allow you to achieve these aerobic goals without having to worry about uneven terrain or even the elements of the day, like rain, cold, or even the sun in your eyes. Catching up on the news or a favorite TV show is an advantage as well.
Also if you want a full body workout then an elliptical machine is what you have been looking for. I can really use my arms on the elliptical to give my legs a break but still keep my pace up. I can also ride backwards to hit a totally different muscle group. If you ran backwards on the street you not only would look odd but you likely will fall and injure yourself.
Most elliptical machines nowadays come with heart rate capabilities, iPod jacks, and preset workout routines to help challenge you. Prices range from a few hundred dollars to $5,000 for a commercial quality machines. There are differences in quality so do your homework, but a quality machine at a reasonable price can be had for sure.
Please consult your doctors before starting any fitness plan on an elliptical. Play with the resistance, angles, and amount of time to see what fits you the best. The variety of workouts should keep most anyone busy and entertained.
