The Importance of Medical Transport Services

Transport services that move patients to destinations in order to receive appropriate medical treatment are termed medical transport services. Patients can be transferred either by road or by air.  These medical transport services may be paid for by the patient or may be offered by a charity free of charge.

One of the most well-known non-profit medical helicopter programs is Flight for Life. This program first became CAMTS accredited in 1996 yet it has been providing transportation services since 1984. During this time, it has transported over 22,000 patients. The program has two helicopters in operation and has in-house staff consisting of a pilot, physician and nurse.

MEDUCARE is a service that ferries individuals from remote areas to areas where they can receive the medical care that they require. They offer ambulance, helicopter and airplane transport throughout the day.

Free air transportation over of distance over 1,500 air miles is provided by Angel flight free of charge to those in need to medical assistance. Free airplane transportation can also be arranged by Corporate Angel Network for cancer patients and bone marrow donors who need to be transported to and from cancer treatment centers. For this long distance medical transport to occur, patients must be mobile and fully able to climb aboard the aircraft. Patients should be able to manage the journey in the absence of on-board medical support.

Some transportation services cater specifically for the needs of medically ill children. The non-profit organization Children’s Flight of Hope provides free airplane transportation both to and from hospital to allow children requiring vital medical care to receive the prompt treatment that they require.

Operation Liftoff provides free air travel for needy children under the age of 18 years and one of their parents/carers. The organization offers wish trips to those suffering from serious, life threatening illnesses who are under the age of 18.

By carrying patients to and from their treatment centers, the stress on both the patient and their carer is reduced and in some cases, such transportation services can help to facilitate a quicker recovery.
