Side Effects Of The Hoodia Gordonii

The Hoodia Gordonii plant is causing a stir in the weight loss products market. Found in the Southern regions of Africa, more specifically the hot, semi humid areas of the Kalahari Desert, the cactus-like plant has been proven to be capable of reducing the amount of food a person takes. The purple flowers of the herb can take up to five years to mature. Botswana, Namibia and South Africa are some of the countries where the hoodia gordonii was first spotted.

There are more than 20 different kinds of hoodia but the most important one is the gordonii, which has the P57 molecule that acts as a natural appetite suppressant. This being the case, questions may arise as to how effective is the product or how often it is taken.

Marketers claim hoodia gordonii has no side effects citing the use of the herb by the San Bushmen to curb their hunger while hunting and are yet to see the side effects of the herb on them.

One problem is that besides the San Bushmen, the hoodia gordonii phenomenon is relatively new to the rest of the world. Most countries have not yet conducted proper research on the hoodia gordonii plant to determine its medical benefits as well as the risks involved. That is why a section of researchers are refuting claims that hoodia gordonii has no side effects.

Possible Liver Damage

One researcher, Jasjit Bindra, who is working with Pfizer pharmaceutical company, argues that despite being able to suppress appetite, there is a component in the hoodia gordonii plant (not the P57), that affects the liver and is yet to be eliminated due to its complications while being processed.

Diabetes

While the hoodia gordonii is suppressing hunger and thirst, there is danger of a drop in the blood sugar levels since the brain has been led by the P57 to believe the body is full and doesn’t need any intake. If suffering from diabetes, it is important to understand the health risks associated with usage of such weight loss solutions.  Or better still, consult your physician.

Dehydration

While hoodia gordonii suppresses your hunger, it also does the same to your thirst. However your body needs to have plenty of water. Some African shepherds died as a result of dehydration. So its important to ensure you take lots of water everyday.

Special Groups

There are certain groups of people who should completely avoid hoodia gordonii products. People with kidney or liver problems, heart conditions, respiratory conditions, intestinal infections must not use the drug. Pregnant women and nursing mothers should also avoid the drug. Hoodia gordonii should never be administered to children for whatever reason.

Most of these warnings are yet to be shown about hoodia gordonii. Remember what may work well for one person may not necessarily be for you. Do not be led into believing hoodia gordonii has no side effects some of them can be fatal.
