How to Relieve Constipation Naturally

If you have issues with constipation, there are various remedies that can help get your digestive tract moving properly again.  There is no “normal” amount of bowel movements for any person to have. Your body is different from everyone else’s. You may have bowel movements three times a day or three times a week. But if you experience constipation, it is broadly defined as having less than three bowel movements over the course of a week, or only producing dry and hard stools that can’t be passed without straining.

You can use over the counter constipation medication if you have occasional symptoms, but that’s not really addressing the problem. If you experience constipation often, this can be a sign that there is something wrong.

The simplest of constipation remedies is to eat plenty of fiber. This will help your body to form bulky, soft stools that are easier to pass. Fiber is found in whole grains, vegetables and fruits. When you shop, compare nutrition labels, and select cereals and breads with the highest content in fiber. You can also buy fiber powders or pills, but it’s better if you get your fiber naturally, through foods.

Also remember to drink plenty of water, to keep your system moving. Liquids add bulk to your stools and fluid to your colon. If your stools are more hydrated, they will be softer and thus easier for you to pass. Fruit juices and water are the best fluid sources. Stay away from drinks that have caffeine, and alcohol, since they can actually cause dehydration.

You also need to exercise on a regular basis to keep your bodily systems functioning at their peak efficiency. Exercising as little as a half hour a day is healthy for your whole body anyway, and it also helps get your gut moving. If you stay more active, you’ll have healthier bowel movements.
