Healthy Recipes Can Contain Cacao!

Chocolate was once labeled the forbidden fruit. But new research has shown that its sinfully delicious taste and texture may not be such a guilty pleasure after all.

In its raw form, chocolate (or cacao beans) contain more anti-oxidants than the majority of fruits and up to 4 times as many as a cup of green tea.

For centuries, cacao has been used for medicinal purposes. It can actually help to lower cholesterol. Dozens of reports exist in medical texts dating back to the 16th century. It was used for everything from encouraging weight gain to improving circulation. More current science shows us that cacao can stimulate the production of natural anti-depressants in our bodies.

Cacao beans are nutrient packed. They are rich in iron, magnesium, copper, zinc, calcium, potassium, and manganese and packed with vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, C, E and panthothenic acid. However, many of these nutrients are lost or destroyed when cacao beans are processed.

In order to reap the full benefits of cacao, you must enjoy it in its raw form. Found in health food stores, the cacao comes in bean, nib, powder or butter form. The raw version of chocolate is still packed with nutrients and is touted as a superfood. You may enjoy some of the benefits by consuming dark chocolate. However, in order for the chocolate to be beneficial it must contain at least 75% cacao.

Try this one of many healthy recipes for rich and creamy dark chocolate sauce. Mix 3/4 cup of raw cacao powder with 3/4 cup of maple syrup or agave nectar. Mix in a tablespoon full of softened coconut oil. In a powerful blender, blend all ingredients until smooth. This sauce can keep in the refrigerator for several days, but never makes it that far in our house. My family loves to use it as a dip for fresh fruits or a sauce that they like to pour over ice cream. It satisfies our sweet tooth while it benefits our health.

Be aware, however, that if you are allergy sensitive or get migraine headaches, the active polyphenols in cacao may be a trigger for these ailments.

The non-guilty superfood, cacao, is not only healthy but delicious! Rejoice, chocolate is GOOD for us!

In smoothies, trail mix, or chocolate bars, cacao can be a delightful addition to a healthy diet.
