Gluten Free Cooking Tips

Gluten free cooking is not as hard as it sounds. You may have to simply modify some recipes and create new ones. You may be allergic to wheat or diagnosis with Celiac disease or suffer from irritable bowel syndrome. Any of these disorders need to have gluten removed from the diet. It may sound hard, but there are many resources available to help you do this.

The best way to begin cooking without gluten is to become familiar with the types of products that contain this. There are many resources on the internet, library or bookstores that will have many resources and information available. Your physician or nutritionist can be a great source as well. Knowing what you can use and what you cannot use is very important since for some, eating even trace amounts of gluten can be harmful. Read all labels very carefully to ensure a product does not include wheat, gluten or by-products.

Once you have educated yourself, you are ready to begin making substitutions to recipes or your favorite dishes. Many folks enjoy fried chicken, but you will not be able to use flour as a coating. No problem, you can simply substitute a rice flour or even ground up gluten free cereals to make your coating. If dairy products are also a problem, you can use rice liquid or soy for your liquid.

Instead of making a burrito or wrap with a flour tortilla, you can use corn tortillas as a great substitute. Using fresh fruits, vegetables and meats will ensure you will not eat any gluten. Many folks use cornstarch as a thickener for all of their soups, sauces and gravies. Simply mixed with water to the desired consistency, it will make these items the same as if you used flour.

Baking and bread making will take some creativity. There are several gluten free flours available at health food stores, on line and at your grocery store. Using rice and tapioca into a flour, the gluten free flours often include items to make your baking successful. Because flour is a part of a chemical reaction in baking, you may need to add extra eggs or xantham gum to create the same effect as flour.

Many companies are now offering 100% gluten free breads and dessert mixes. This is great for anyone who may not enjoy baking from scratch. These mixes will have all the right ingredients to make a tasty dessert.

Gluten free cooking does not need to be hard. Make sure you keep your gluten free ingredients away from others so you do not have cross contamination.
